What does "neurodivergent" mean?

Neurodivergent is a term for people whose brains work differently than what is considered "typical." It includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other natural variations in how people think, learn, communicate, and experience the world.

Neurodivergent Care

Let me tell you a little story. A young girl spends all of her time daydreaming elaborate stories while the teacher is talking. She is very bright, everyone tells her so! However, she flunks out of the first round of her spelling bee (in front of the entire school), and she can't memorize her times table no matter how hard she tries. She’s constantly in trouble for talking out of turn and bouncing her leg during quiet time. She can recite Edgar Allen Poe from memory, but she can’t quite understand how to fit in. (The Edgar Allen Poe poetry probably isn’t helping.) Fast forward to college, and no matter how hard she squints at the textbook, the numbers won’t stay still. Her scholarship is on the line. If she flunks this class, she’s doomed. She changes her major and tells everyone she’s just not good at math. Everyone keeps telling her she’s smart…so why is everything so incredibly hard?

Does this sound familiar? A year after I graduated summa cum laude from my undergraduate degree, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Two years after I had written my second novel, I was diagnosed with dyslexia.

I’ve heard countless stories from family, friends, peers, and clients about the toll ADHD, Autism, and learning disorders have taken on their lives. Many therapists and counselors don’t understand “neurodivergent” brains, leaving their clients at a loss to describe their life experiences. Enough “failures” and people give up on therapy. But don’t give up! I have developed my practice to be tailor-made for people with neurodivergent brains. We will blend together therapy with the accommodations, advocacy, and skills practice you will need to create success.
